"The best classroom and the richest classroom is roofed only by the sky" - Margaret McMillan
Curriculum Intent
- Forest School is an important part of what we offer, giving children unique opportunities to learn essential life skills and build a strong connection with nature.
- We believe outdoor learning is vital for every child’s overall development. Forest School creates a safe, stimulating environment where children learn through exploration, hands-on activities, and play. Spending time in nature helps them grow in confidence, resilience, and curiosity.
- Our goal is to nurture a generation of children who care about the environment and show responsibility and empathy. Through Forest School, we aim to spark a lifelong love of learning and the outdoors.
Implementation
Our Forest School programme offers regular outdoor sessions, carefully planned and led by a qualified Forest School Leader, with support from experienced staff. We take a child-centred approach, encouraging independence and giving children the freedom to explore and take ownership of their learning.
Sessions take place in our on site area – a purpose built site that we are continuing to develop and a space full of opportunities for adventure and discovery. Activities include:
- Building shelters
- Creating art with natural materials
- Learning to use tools safely
- Fire lighting under close supervision
- hunting for bugs
- Identifying trees and plants
- Climbing and balancing
- Making habitats for wildlife
These experiences build creativity, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork, while promoting physical health and emotional well-being through time in nature.
Impact
Forest School creates an environment where children can set and achieve their own goals, building confidence and self-esteem through success. These experiences foster resilience and strong problem-solving skills. This positive outlook on learning often carries into the classroom, leading to greater motivation, improved focus, and a willingness to take on new challenges.
