The Pupil Premium is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers. Schools receive funding for each child registered as eligible for free school meals at any point in the last six years.

Pupil Premium funding will be tailored to meet the individual pupil needs to support their learning and progress. However, as standard, pupils in receipt of Pupil Premium will also be entitled to financial support with school uniform, school trips, an external sport or a regular peripatetic lesson (e.g. a funded club).

Eligibility

Pupil premium funding in 2026/27 is available to pupils eligible for free school meals, looked-after and previously looked-after children, and children from service families.

Eligibility Criteria

Pupils qualify for pupil premium funding if they meet any of the following conditions:

Free School Meals (FSM) or Ever 6 FSM: Pupils who are currently eligible for free school meals or have been eligible at any point in the last six years. Eligibility is based on household income below £7,400 after tax, excluding benefits for the 2026/27 financial year
Looked-after children (LAC): Pupils who are currently in the care of a local authority. Funding for these pupils is managed by the local authority’s virtual school head in consultation with the child’s school
Previously looked-after children (PLAC): Pupils who were previously in state care, including those adopted from care or who have left care under a special guardianship or child arrangement order
Service children: Pupils with parents in the armed forces. This funding, known as the Service Pupil Premium (SPP), helps schools provide pastoral support and mitigate the impact of family mobility or parental deployment
Pupil premium funding is allocated to schools and local authorities, not directly to individual pupils, and schools can use the funding to support the educational attainment of eligible pupils in a flexible manner
